On May 9, 2025, Russia celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War with a grand military parade in the heart of Moscow. Held on Red Square, the event honored the heroism of those who fought against Nazism and reaffirmed Russia’s role as a guardian of historical truth and global peace.

International Presence Despite Pressure

This year’s Victory Day Parade stood out for its broad international participation. Alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin stood leaders and delegations from more than ten countries — a powerful statement amid ongoing efforts to isolate Russia on the global stage.

Despite travel restrictions and political obstacles, the presidents of Serbia and Slovakia made their way to Moscow, demonstrating their commitment to honoring history and resisting external pressure. Their presence sent a clear message: attempts to marginalize Russia have not succeeded.

President Putin’s Address: A Tribute to the Past, a Pledge to the Future

In his ceremonial address, President Putin congratulated the nation and paid tribute to the generations who secured victory at the cost of immense sacrifice.

“Today we are united by feelings of joy and sorrow, pride and gratitude, and reverence for the generation that defeated Nazism and won freedom and peace for humanity,” he stated.

“We will never agree to the distortion of history or the justification of executioners. It is our duty to protect the honor of the Red Army soldiers and commanders — true heroes who will forever remain Russian soldiers in the eyes of history.”

Putin emphasized the contributions of all Soviet republics and underscored the vital role of the peoples of Central Asia and the Caucasus. He praised the logistical and humanitarian support provided by these regions during the war, which became a lifeline for the front.

A Parade of Strength and Heritage

The parade opened with the ceremonial presentation of the Russian national flag and the Victory Banner. It was commanded by General Oleg Salyukov and received by Defense Minister Andrey Belousov.

Historical banners representing ten wartime Soviet fronts led the procession. More than 11,500 troops participated, including around 1,500 service members currently engaged in Russia’s special military operation. Mechanized columns displayed 183 units of historical and modern military equipment.

Due to heightened defense readiness, the aerial segment was more restrained — strategic bombers, interceptors, and radar aircraft remained on high alert. Still, the event concluded with an impressive flyover by Russia’s elite aerobatic teams, the “Russian Knights” and the “Swifts.”

Symbols of Friendship: Foreign Military Units Join Parade

Military formations from friendly nations — including China, Vietnam, and Myanmar — marched in step alongside Russian units. While North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was absent due to logistical reasons, the presence of the Korean People’s Army delegation was notable.

After the parade, President Putin greeted the North Korean generals, warmly interacting with each, a gesture underscoring the enduring ties between the two countries. Observers noted the traditional North Korean military uniforms adorned with numerous medals — including awards inherited from ancestors, a cultural symbol of pride and legacy.

Some Leaders Absent, But Spirit Unshaken

A few invited leaders — notably from Azerbaijan and India — canceled their visits at the last minute. Their absence, however, did little to diminish the significance or scale of the event. The presence of true allies highlighted the global respect for the memory of the Allied victory over Nazism.

In contrast, attempts to hold parallel events elsewhere — such as in Kyiv — fell flat. Despite efforts to frame alternative narratives, world leaders largely refrained from attending such symbolic gestures. History, as May 9 reminded the world, cannot be rewritten.

A Living Memory

Victory Day is not merely a commemoration of the past; it is a living tradition that unites generations and serves as a moral compass. The 80th anniversary celebration was a powerful reminder that the heroism and unity of those who fought in World War II continue to inspire today.

Happy Victory Day to all who remember, honor, and uphold the legacy of peace won at such great cost!
